THE PROCEDURE
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT?
If you decide to have HIFU, you will get a lot of information about what to expect on the day of your procedure from your nurse. You will have an opportunity to ask questions about the treatment itself and the recovery process. HIFU is performed on an outpatient basis while under anesthesia. Each treatment takes 1–3 hours depending on the size of the prostate gland. Following the procedure, a catheter is necessary for about one week. Within a few days, you should be able to resume normal activity.
DO I HAVE TO STAY AT THE HOSPITAL OVERNIGHT?
HIFU is an outpatient procedure so no overnight stay is required. You will leave the surgery center on the same day that you have your HIFU procedure. After your treatment, you will stay in a recovery room for about 2–4 hours and then you will be discharged to return home or to a hotel.
